WASHINGTON, D.C. — The White House is rejecting reports that President Donald Trump decided against attending the official 9/11 memorial ceremony in New York City because organizers would not allow him to deliver a public address.
The dispute comes as the United States prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when nearly 3,000 people were killed in New York, at the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Reports had suggested that Trump withdrew from plans to attend the ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum after organizers reiterated longstanding rules prohibiting political figures from making speeches during the solemn observance.
The restrictions have been in place since 2012 and were established after political disagreements surrounding the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site. The ceremony has traditionally focused on victims, their families and the first responders who participated in the rescue and recovery efforts.
Trump is instead expected to attend a memorial event at the Pentagon in Virginia, where American Airlines Flight 77 crashed after being hijacked during the attacks. Reports indicate that the president is also expected to speak at that event.
The decision prompted speculation that Trump’s absence from the World Trade Center ceremony was directly related to his inability to address attendees.
The White House strongly disputed that interpretation.
White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said Trump remains deeply connected to the events of September 11 and would commemorate the anniversary by honoring those who lost their lives, their families and the first responders who risked their lives that day.
Trump also addressed the reports directly on Truth Social, criticizing the characterization of his plans and arguing that the New York ceremony has always been intended as a solemn remembrance rather than a political gathering.
The president said he has attended numerous events in New York over the years and pointed out that officials generally do not deliver political speeches during the World Trade Center memorial ceremony.
Trump also said he would not object to not speaking, emphasizing that the anniversary should be devoted to remembering the victims and their loved ones.
The controversy comes as organizers prepare for what is expected to be a particularly significant commemoration. The 25th anniversary represents a milestone for a generation that witnessed the attacks and for younger Americans who know the events primarily through history.
The annual ceremony at the World Trade Center site typically includes the reading of victims’ names, moments of silence and tributes from relatives and survivors.
Beyond the memorial events, the anniversary is also expected to draw renewed attention to the sacrifices made by firefighters, police officers, emergency workers and civilians who responded to the attacks.
While questions remain over the president’s exact schedule, the White House maintains that Trump’s decision to participate in the Pentagon ceremony should not be interpreted as a dispute over speaking privileges.
Instead, officials say the president will mark the anniversary by honoring the nearly 3,000 Americans who died and recognizing the courage of those who responded during one of the most consequential moments in U.S. history.
