TUCSON, Ariz. — The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, continued to intensify in February as authorities pursued forensic evidence, surveillance footage and public tips in an effort to determine what happened to her.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her Tucson-area home on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the following day. Investigators have increasingly treated the case as an apparent abduction after blood found on her porch was confirmed to belong to her. Authorities have also recovered DNA evidence from a glove found near the residence.
The case has attracted national attention, with the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department coordinating the investigation and appealing to the public for information.
Masked Suspect Becomes Central Focus
One of the most significant developments came from surveillance footage showing a masked individual near Guthrie’s home around the time she disappeared.
The person was captured apparently tampering with the home’s doorbell camera. Investigators described the individual as a man of approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches, wearing dark clothing, gloves and carrying what appeared to be a handgun holster.
Investigators have closely examined the suspect’s clothing and equipment, including a distinctive backpack identified as a 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack sold through Walmart. Authorities have worked with the retailer in hopes that sales information or surveillance footage could produce additional leads.
The FBI increased its reward for information leading to Guthrie’s discovery to $100,000 and released additional photographs as investigators sought help identifying the person seen in the footage.
Family Not Identified as Suspects
The intense investigation has also generated widespread speculation online involving people close to Guthrie.
Authorities have emphasized that the Guthrie family is cooperating with investigators. There has been no public indication that Savannah Guthrie or other members of the family have been identified as suspects in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
Investigators have also questioned people and searched locations as they followed leads, but those actions should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of wrongdoing.
Ransom Notes and Forensic Evidence
