WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recounted an unusual episode aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials reportedly spent about 90 minutes trying to determine whether a sleeping passenger was experiencing a medical emergency.
Rubio described the incident during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, recalling that the situation occurred while officials were returning from China.
According to Rubio, the officials noticed an individual sleeping in a conference room aboard the presidential aircraft. What initially appeared to be an ordinary nap became increasingly concerning when the person seemed unresponsive despite activity and noise nearby.
The unusual circumstances left Rubio and his colleagues uncertain about how to respond. They reportedly debated whether they should wake the individual, seek medical assistance or simply allow the person to continue sleeping.
The concern was that the individual might have been experiencing a serious medical problem rather than simply being deeply asleep.
Rubio recalled the unsettling question that crossed his mind: “If they were dead, like what do you do?”
He said the person’s apparent lack of response and unusual breathing pattern contributed to the uncertainty. Despite those concerns, officials did not immediately treat the situation as a confirmed medical emergency.
Eventually, the mystery was resolved without incident.
“Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said.
Rubio did not identify the individual, and no independent information has emerged publicly establishing who the person was. Speculation on social media followed the story, with some users offering humorous theories about the person’s identity, but there is no evidence supporting those claims.
The episode attracted additional attention because Rubio has previously faced questions about sleep and presidential meetings.
During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu asked Rubio whether he had ever personally witnessed President Donald Trump falling asleep during a meeting. Rubio said he had not.
Rubio instead described Trump as maintaining a demanding schedule and frequently communicating with administration officials early in the morning.
Lieu later challenged that account, saying he had video footage that he believed showed Trump with his eyes closed during a Cabinet meeting while Rubio was speaking. Rubio maintained that he had never personally seen the president fall asleep.
The Air Force One episode, however, appears to have involved no political dispute. Instead, Rubio’s account offered a glimpse into an unusual situation aboard the presidential aircraft, where officials were forced to decide whether an apparently sleeping passenger might actually need urgent medical attention.
What began as an ordinary moment quickly became a prolonged period of uncertainty for those nearby.
In the end, the individual was unharmed, turning what could have become a serious emergency into an unusual story from life aboard Air Force One.
