Trump Announces Sweeping Economic Pressure Campaign Against Iran

President Donald Trump has announced a major escalation in economic pressure against Iran, declaring that his administration will pursue what he described as an unprecedented campaign of financial isolation.

In a statement Tuesday, Trump argued that Tehran had repeatedly rejected opportunities for diplomacy, including proposed agreements and pauses in hostilities. He accused Iran of continuing attacks against U.S. forces, violating ceasefire arrangements and pursuing threats against American officials.

“Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” Trump wrote, describing the initiative as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”

The announcement follows a broader military campaign that Trump says has severely damaged Iran’s military capabilities. His administration maintains that Iranian naval and air assets, weapons-production facilities and other military infrastructure have suffered significant destruction.

The economic offensive is expected to focus on cutting off financial channels that allow Iran to generate revenue and maintain international trade. Trump specifically warned countries, businesses and financial institutions against assisting Tehran through oil transactions, money transfers, exchange operations, shipping arrangements, front companies or other mechanisms.

The warning could have significant implications for countries that continue to conduct business with Iran despite U.S. sanctions. Trump said entities providing what he considers an economic lifeline to Tehran could face substantial secondary consequences from Washington.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has previously indicated that the administration was preparing additional measures designed to intensify pressure on Iran’s financial system.

The strategy represents a broader effort to combine military pressure with economic restrictions in an attempt to weaken Tehran’s ability to finance its government and military operations.

Iran, meanwhile, faces serious economic challenges, including high inflation and widespread financial instability. The country’s economic difficulties have added to pressure on a government already confronting heightened tensions with Washington and other international powers.

Trump has repeatedly emphasized that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains a central objective of his policy toward Tehran.

The latest announcement signals that the administration intends to expand its campaign beyond direct military action and target the international financial networks that help sustain Iran’s economy.

The effectiveness and broader consequences of the measures will depend heavily on how other countries, financial institutions and international businesses respond to Washington’s demands.

For Tehran, the announcement marks another significant escalation in an already volatile confrontation, with economic isolation now positioned as a central component of the administration’s strategy toward Iran.
