Florida has executed 74-year-old Dennis Sochor, making him the oldest inmate put to death in state history.

Dennis Sochor Executed in Florida More Than Four Decades After 1982 Murder Conviction

Florida has carried out the execution of Dennis Sochor, concluding a case that spanned more than four decades and remained one of the state’s longest-running capital punishment proceedings.

Sochor was convicted in connection with the 1982 kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Patricia Gifford, who disappeared on New Year’s Day after rejecting his advances. According to prosecutors, Gifford was abducted after leaving a lounge in Broward County, Florida. Despite extensive searches conducted over the years, her body was never recovered.

The investigation remained unresolved until 1986, when Sochor was arrested on unrelated charges in another state and extradited to Florida. During the investigation, authorities said he confessed to abducting and strangling Gifford before disposing of her body in an undisclosed location. Investigators were never able to locate her remains despite continued efforts.

Following his conviction, Sochor spent decades on Florida’s death row as his case moved through the state and federal court systems. Like many capital cases, the proceedings involved numerous appeals and post-conviction challenges, resulting in years of legal review before the sentence was ultimately carried out.

The execution took place at Florida State Prison in Bradford County, where Sochor was put to death by lethal injection under the state’s three-drug execution protocol. Prison officials confirmed that the sentence was carried out after all remaining legal appeals had been exhausted.

The case drew renewed attention because of both the length of time between the crime and the execution and the fact that Patricia Gifford’s body has never been found. While the execution concludes the criminal case against Sochor, Gifford’s disappearance remains one of the enduring tragedies associated with the investigation, as her family never recovered her remains.

The execution marks the final chapter in a case that has remained part of Florida’s criminal justice system for more than 40 years, highlighting the lengthy legal process that often accompanies capital punishment cases in the United States.
