For years, the beaches near Taiwanese artist Liang Renchuan’s home were far more than scenic stretches of coastline. They were places filled with memories, inspiration, and countless adventures shared with his most loyal companion — a rescued dog named Hachiko.
After every storm, Renchuan would head to the shoreline searching for pieces of driftwood washed ashore by the sea. What others saw as discarded debris, he saw as the raw materials for his artwork. Yet the treasured beach excursions were never just about collecting wood. They were moments spent alongside the dog who had become a cherished member of his family.
Hachiko entered Renchuan’s life under deeply emotional circumstances. The stray puppy appeared unexpectedly on the very day of his father’s funeral, a moment the artist still remembers vividly.
“He appeared in the funeral parlour that night,” Renchuan recalled. “He became a part of my family.”
From that day forward, the two became inseparable.
Whether walking along the beach, exploring the coastline, or spending long hours in the studio, Hachiko was always nearby. While Renchuan focused on gathering driftwood after storms, the energetic dog had other priorities.
“He was quite lively, especially at the beach,” Renchuan said. “Carrying the wood was mostly my job. Hachiko usually just wanted to play.”
Their simple routine became a way of life. The driftwood they collected together eventually found its way into Renchuan’s artwork, while Hachiko became a familiar presence in the studio where those creations came to life.
Photographs often showed the faithful companion sitting beside completed sculptures, almost as if he were supervising the creative process. The workshop became more than a workplace — it became a shared space filled with memories, companionship, and years of friendship.
As time passed, however, Renchuan became increasingly aware that his beloved dog was growing older. Wanting to preserve a piece of Hachiko forever, he began working on a special project long before tragedy struck.
Using driftwood gathered during their years of beach adventures, Renchuan carefully crafted a life-sized sculpture of Hachiko. Every piece of wood carried memories of places they had visited together, making the artwork far more than a simple sculpture.
“I wanted to leave a memento after he was gone,” the artist explained.
In 2025, Hachiko unexpectedly passed away inside the studio they had shared for more than a decade. The loss devastated Renchuan, leaving an emptiness that words could scarcely describe.
Determined to honor his companion’s memory, he completed the driftwood sculpture and painted it in his signature artistic style. As a final touch, he placed Hachiko’s collar around the sculpture, transforming it into a deeply personal memorial.
Today, the remarkable artwork stands as a powerful tribute to loyalty, friendship, and unconditional love. Constructed from pieces of driftwood collected during years of shared adventures, the sculpture represents not only the dog itself but the countless memories the two created together.
The story has touched thousands of animal lovers around the world, many of whom see their own experiences reflected in Renchuan’s tribute. Beyond its artistic beauty, the sculpture serves as a reminder of the profound bonds that can exist between humans and their pets.
For Renchuan, the memorial is also a final message to the companion who stood beside him through some of life’s most important moments.
“I want to tell him, ‘Go and have fun. My dad will be with you in heaven,'” he said.
Perhaps the most emotional reflection came as he remembered the beach trips they once enjoyed together.
“We used to go to the beach together to get driftwood. Now I can only use driftwood to get you back again.”
His words serve as a touching reminder that while beloved pets may leave this world, the memories they create remain with us forever.
