Americas most beloved family have been involved in a …

GILLETTE, Wyo. — A devastating plane crash in a remote expanse of northeastern Wyoming has claimed seven lives, wiping out three members of the Grammy-nominated Southern Gospel ensemble The Nelons and sending shockwaves through the American Christian music community.

Local emergency personnel and federal aviation regulators confirmed that all seven people aboard the private aircraft died when it went down in an isolated field, sparking an intense fire that consumed the wreckage before first responders could intervene.

Among the dead are key figures of the beloved, multi-award-winning family group: founding member Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband and group manager Jason Clark, and their daughter Amber Nelon Kistler. Amber’s husband, Nathan Kistler, also died in the crash, alongside family assistant Melanie Hodges, pilot Larry Haynie, and Haynie’s wife, Melissa.

The sole surviving member of the vocal group and immediate family, Autumn Nelon Streetman, was not on board the flight. Traveling separately with her husband, Jamie Streetman, she learned of the catastrophe upon arriving in the Pacific Northwest.

Journey to Alaska Ends in Catastrophe

The party had been traveling en route to Seattle, where they were scheduled to board the annual Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska—a marquee gathering in the gospel music industry uniting some of Christian music’s most prominent recording artists.

The Nelons had been slated as a headline act throughout the week-long voyage, continuing a multi-generational ministry known for intricate vocal arrangements, traditional Southern Gospel harmonies, and prominent positions on the Billboard charts.

Federal aviation authorities and local law enforcement said the private aircraft encountered catastrophic difficulty mid-flight over rural Campbell County, Wyoming. Witness statements and emergency dispatch logs indicate the aircraft appeared to experience severe mechanical issues while at cruising altitude before descending rapidly into open terrain.

First responders rushed to the scene following 911 reports from nearby residents who witnessed smoke rising over the hills, but the impact and subsequent post-crash blaze left no possibility of rescue. Campbell County emergency crews arrived to find the aircraft fully engulfed in flames, working for hours in rugged conditions to secure the perimeter and extinguish the surrounding grass fires ignited by the wreckage.

Grief Across the Gospel Community

The loss reverberated immediately through the gospel music industry, where The Nelons have been an institutional fixture for nearly half a century. Originally formed in the 1970s by Hall of Fame patriarch Rex Nelon, the group went on to earn multiple Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, three Grammy nominations, and induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

Following the confirmation of the victims’ identities, Autumn Nelon Streetman released a statement expressing profound heartbreak while leaning on the faith her family spent decades singing about on stages worldwide.

Describing her loss as “indescribable,” Streetman extended heartfelt gratitude to friends, colleagues, and listeners across the globe who inundated the family with prayers and condolences.

“Thank you for the prayers that have already been extended to me, my husband, Jamie, and our team as we navigate these coming days,” Streetman said. “We ask for your continued prayers, love, and support as we mourn the loss of our family and our dearest friends.”

Tributes swiftly poured in from leaders across the faith community. Renowned singer-songwriter and founder of the Homecoming tour series, Bill Gaither, called the tragedy an unfathomable loss for the entire gospel music fraternity, praising the group’s dedication to their craft, their boundless warmth, and their unwavering message of hope.

Federal Investigation Underway

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been deployed to the crash site to determine the probable cause of the failure.

Federal officials confirmed that forensic teams will examine the airframe, engine components, maintenance logs, and prevailing weather patterns at the time of the descent. A preliminary investigative report detailing the flight path, radar contacts, and pilot communications is expected within the coming weeks, while a comprehensive determination of the accident’s cause will likely take a year or more.

For the international gospel community, the coming days will be marked by somber memorial services across Georgia and Tennessee, as fans and peers prepare to honor a family whose songs defined the soundtrack of modern Christian music.
