Iran says it does not trust US as Trump toughens terms

Iran Rejects Deal Without Guarantees as Nuclear Talks Continue

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned Sunday that Tehran will not approve any agreement with the United States unless it fully protects the rights and interests of the Iranian people. His remarks came amid reports that President Donald Trump had returned a revised and tougher proposal to Iran, underscoring the challenges still facing negotiators.

The two sides remain divided on several major issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. Any further changes to the proposed framework could delay a final agreement aimed at easing tensions and restoring stability in the region.

Iran insists its nuclear activities are intended for peaceful civilian purposes. However, the United States and its allies continue to express concerns that the program could eventually be used to develop nuclear weapons. Trump recently stated that preventing Iran from acquiring such weapons remains his top priority and claimed Tehran had accepted that condition.

Iranian officials have disputed some of Trump’s statements and stressed that no agreement has been finalized. State media reported that both sides are still exchanging draft texts and proposed amendments, with the possibility that any future deal could ultimately be rejected.

Tehran has also demanded the release of approximately $12 billion in frozen assets before engaging in more substantial nuclear discussions. In addition, Iranian lawmakers are considering measures that would strengthen Iran’s control over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, regional tensions remain high. Sporadic clashes have continued despite a temporary ceasefire reached earlier this year. Fighting has also intensified in Lebanon, where Israel expanded operations against Hezbollah, prompting renewed calls from Lebanese leaders for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.
