WASHINGTON — The Vance family has welcomed a new member, bringing a joyful new chapter to the household of Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance.
The couple announced on July 19 that their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance, had been born. Usha and the baby were reported to be healthy, while the couple said their three older children were excited to meet their new brother.
Alec joins brothers Ewan and Vivek and sister Mirabel, who was 4 years old when her youngest sibling arrived. The birth marked a notable moment for the Vance family and also made history: Alec was the first child born to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years.
A New Chapter for the Vance Children
For the Vance children, the arrival of their baby brother represented a major change at home.
Mirabel, the youngest of the older siblings before Alec’s birth, has received particular attention because of her age and position in the family. At four, she was old enough to understand that a new baby was coming while still young enough to experience the excitement of becoming an older sister in a very immediate way.
The Vances had announced in January that they were expecting a son in July. At the time, the couple said they were looking forward to welcoming their fourth child and expressed gratitude for the medical care their family had received.
The family’s growing household has also attracted public attention because JD Vance has frequently spoken about family and parenthood during his political career. Despite their public roles, the couple has generally kept many aspects of their children’s lives private.
Family Welcomes Alec
Following the birth, the Vances thanked the medical professionals who cared for Usha and the newborn, including staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit.
The couple later shared family photographs showing the parents with their four children, offering a glimpse of the newly expanded household. Usha described the transition as settling into life as a family of six.
For the Vance family, the arrival of Alec marks more than the addition of another child. It is a new stage for Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel as older siblings and another chapter in a family that has spent much of the past two years balancing an increasingly public life with the ordinary milestones of raising young children.
For Mirabel especially, the long-awaited role of big sister has now become a reality.
