WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump sparked renewed debate over presidential influence and media independence after telling CNN anchor Jake Tapper that his administration was working to put the network on what he called a “normal path.”
The remark came during a July 12 appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, when Trump called into the program to discuss the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. The brief exchange quickly drew attention because of Trump’s long-running criticism of CNN and his broader disputes with major news organizations.
Trump initially declined to discuss other subjects, including the latest U.S. military action involving Iran, saying he did not want to move away from a discussion of Graham out of respect for the late senator.
As the conversation concluded, Tapper invited Trump to return for a more extensive interview.
“We will do that,” Trump replied before adding, “We’re trying to have CNN go on a normal path. And we will do that.”
Tapper responded that he was already “on a normal path” and thanked the president for calling in. Trump agreed before the exchange ended. CNN’s official transcript confirms the wording and sequence of the conversation.
Comment Draws Attention to CNN’s Future
Trump’s comment immediately became a subject of discussion among media observers because of his history of criticizing CNN and his stated desire for changes in the network’s editorial direction.

The remark came as the proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount Skydance was moving through regulatory and legal processes. CNN is part of Warner Bros. Discovery, while Paramount Skydance owns CBS News.
The Justice Department announced in June that its Antitrust Division had completed its review and determined that the transaction was unlikely to harm competition or consumers.
The merger has nevertheless faced additional legal challenges from a coalition of states seeking to block the deal, meaning regulatory approval did not by itself end the controversy surrounding the proposed transaction.

The timing of Trump’s remarks has fueled broader questions about the relationship between political power and media ownership.
Critics of the president’s approach have argued that elected officials should not attempt to influence the editorial direction of independent news organizations.
