WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recounted an unusual episode aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials reportedly spent about 90 minutes debating whether a seemingly motionless passenger was simply asleep—or might actually be experiencing a medical emergency.
Rubio shared the story during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, describing a tense but ultimately harmless situation that unfolded as officials were returning from China.
According to Rubio, an unidentified person remained motionless inside a conference room despite significant activity and noise taking place around them. The unusual behavior eventually left those nearby uncertain about whether they should intervene.
“We spent about 90 minutes sort of debating should we make a move?” Rubio recalled.
He said officials considered whether they should contact the aircraft’s physician or otherwise check on the individual.
The dilemma, Rubio explained, was partly the awkwardness of waking someone who might simply be sleeping deeply. But the possibility that the person could actually be suffering a serious medical problem made the decision considerably more complicated.
“Because it’s embarrassing if you wake them up,” Rubio said, describing the possible reaction from someone who was merely asleep.
“But if they were dead, like what do you do?” he added.
Rubio said the individual appeared to sleep through “a lot of noise” and did not seem to respond to surrounding stimuli. He also described the person’s breathing pattern as difficult to interpret, adding to the uncertainty among those observing the situation.
Despite the concern, officials apparently hesitated for an extended period rather than immediately waking the passenger or summoning medical personnel.
Eventually, the mystery resolved itself.
“Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said.
Rubio did not identify the individual involved, nor did he disclose the precise date of the flight or the names of other officials who were part of the discussion.
The lack of identifying details has prompted humorous speculation online, with social-media users suggesting various prominent figures may have been the unusually deep sleeper. However, there is no evidence supporting those guesses, and Rubio provided no information establishing the person’s identity.
Rubio Also Addressed Trump’s Sleeping Habits
The anecdote drew additional attention because Rubio had previously faced questions about President Donald Trump’s sleep habits during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.
Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California questioned Rubio about whether he had ever attended a meeting where Trump appeared to fall asleep.
Rubio said he had never personally seen the president fall asleep and instead characterized Trump as someone who maintains an unusually demanding schedule.
Lieu subsequently challenged Rubio’s statement and said he had video footage that he believed showed Trump with his eyes closed during a Cabinet meeting while Rubio was speaking.
Rubio nevertheless maintained that he had never witnessed Trump fall asleep.
The congressional exchange and the Air Force One anecdote are separate incidents, and Rubio did not suggest that the unidentified passenger aboard the aircraft was Trump.
A Strange Story With a Harmless Ending
What initially appeared to be a potentially serious situation ultimately became an unusual travel story with a reassuring conclusion.
For roughly an hour and a half, officials reportedly faced an awkward question: intervene and risk waking someone who was simply sleeping—or wait while an unexplained lack of movement continued.
In the end, no medical emergency was reported.
The identity of the passenger remains undisclosed, but Rubio’s account offered an unusual glimpse into the unpredictable moments that can unfold even during highly controlled official travel.
