WASHINGTON — A major security incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton after an armed suspect allegedly attempted to breach a security checkpoint during the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials.
The incident occurred shortly after the high-profile event began, sending hundreds of journalists, government officials and invited guests into lockdown as law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire near the hotel’s security screening area.
Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Investigators allege that Allen attempted to force his way through a security checkpoint while carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun and several knives. He was intercepted by security personnel before reaching the main ballroom, where President Trump and other administration officials were attending the event.
During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged and a U.S. Secret Service agent was struck. Officials said the agent survived after the bullet was stopped by a protective vest and was later treated at a local hospital. Allen was also injured during the incident and was taken into custody. Authorities confirmed that no fatalities were reported.
Secret Service agents immediately evacuated Trump, Vice President Vance and other protected officials while officers secured the hotel and conducted a thorough search for any additional threats. Guests were instructed to evacuate or shelter in place until authorities declared the area secure. The remainder of the evening’s program was canceled.
Federal investigators have launched an extensive investigation into the suspect’s background, including his recent activities, writings and possible motive. Prosecutors have filed multiple federal charges, including allegations of attempting to assassinate the president, along with firearms and assault-related offenses.
The incident has renewed concerns about security at major political events attended by senior government officials. Although the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is protected by extensive security measures each year, investigators are now examining how the suspect was able to approach the checkpoint while allegedly armed.
President Trump praised the Secret Service and responding law enforcement officers for their rapid actions, saying their response helped prevent a potentially far more serious attack.
The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue reviewing evidence, interviewing witnesses and assessing the circumstances surrounding the attempted breach.
