The U.S. Navy has ended an extensive search for a sailor who went missing after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea.
The search continued for more than 102 hours, covering approximately 14,000 square miles of open water, but rescuers were unable to locate the missing crew member. Four other sailors were recovered from the water and survived the incident.
The sailor’s identity is being withheld pending notification of relatives, in accordance with standard military procedures.
The helicopter, assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, made the emergency landing around 3:30 a.m. ET on July 1 in waters within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.
U.S. military officials said there was no evidence that hostile action caused the incident. The circumstances surrounding the emergency landing remain under investigation.
The U.S. 5th Fleet confirmed that the search involved a coordinated effort by Navy and Air Force personnel. In a statement, the command said the operation covered more than 14,000 square miles during the four-day effort.
Three of the four recovered crew members were reportedly in stable condition aboard the USS George H.W. Bush. Three sailors sustained injuries during the emergency landing, according to reports.
The loss comes as American forces continue operating across a volatile region amid heightened tensions and military confrontation involving Iran. According to reports, the death brings the number of confirmed American service members killed during the conflict to 14.
The incident underscores the risks faced by U.S. personnel operating across the Arabian Sea, the Strait of Hormuz and the broader Central Command region.
Despite the conclusion of the search, several critical questions remain unanswered. Military investigators have yet to determine what caused the helicopter to make the emergency landing or why one crew member could not be recovered.
The MH-60S Sea Hawk is a versatile naval helicopter used for missions including logistics, combat support, search and rescue and other specialized operations. Its loss will therefore be closely examined as investigators work to determine whether mechanical failure, operational circumstances or another factor contributed to the incident.
For the sailor’s family and fellow service members, the conclusion of the search marks a devastating moment after days of uncertainty.
While recovery efforts have ended, the formal investigation is expected to continue as the Navy works to establish what happened in the final moments before the helicopter entered the water.
