U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday issued a warning to Iran during the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, stating that a recently agreed memorandum of understanding with Tehran is not a final agreement and that military options remain available if terms are not met.
Speaking alongside Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, Trump emphasized that the document signed with Iran represents an initial framework rather than a binding peace deal. He said the United States’ primary objective is to ensure Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon, describing that goal as the central focus of the agreement.
Trump also reiterated a hardline stance toward Iran’s leadership, referencing longstanding tensions between the two countries since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. He said any future progress would depend on Iran’s compliance with the terms under discussion.
Senior U.S. officials have described the memorandum as an early-stage agreement, with more detailed technical negotiations expected to follow. According to officials, any economic incentives or policy adjustments would be conditional on Iran meeting its obligations.
Vice President JD Vance, who is expected to represent the United States in upcoming discussions, has previously stated that Iran would not receive immediate financial benefits simply for entering or signing preliminary arrangements, and that any relief would be tied to verified compliance.
The agreement process remains in its early stages, with officials noting that key details are still under negotiation ahead of a planned signing ceremony scheduled for later this week in Geneva, Switzerland.
At present, all parties continue to emphasize differing interpretations of the framework, and further negotiations are expected to determine whether a final agreement can be reached.
